Robert Mace Bent

I am a self-taught painter living and working in a beautiful, diverse and gritty area of Western Massachusetts alongside the Connecticut River east of the Berkshires.

I am committed to the work of painting, mark making and the process driven task of growing an image.

From my point of view, putting color and line on paper or canvas becomes a form of verse with each painter’s dialect revealing their development and the experience of knowing.

My practice includes both painting and drawing. In recent years I've expanded my use of acrylic paints and continue using oil paint. In the process I've learned some of the unique qualities of each and frequently combine both mediums in the same piece.

In my drawing, I typically use graphite, pastel and charcoal. Using dry media can result in spontaneous marking and gestures which I find more challenging to accomplish with oil, particularly.
